PM: Julius Nyerere Dam Testament to Tanzania’s Strong Will, Egypt’s Extensive Expertise

Egypt: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said Saturday, August 22, 2026, that the Julius Nyerere Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant project in Tanzania stood as a testament to Tanzania's strong will and Egypt's extensive technical capabilities and expertise.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Madbouly delivered a speech during the inauguration of the Julius Nyerere Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant project in Tanzania. He expressed pleasure in participating in the event, under a direct mandate from President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, highlighting the significance of the project as a symbol of the collaborative spirit between the two nations.

Madbouly emphasized that this achievement reinforces the shared political understanding between Tanzania and Egypt, paving the way for sustainable development through mutual cooperation. He conveyed President El Sisi's greetings and congratulations to the Tanzanian people and extended Egypt's heartfelt wishes for continued prosperity.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed Egypt's readiness to maintain its partnership with Tanzania and other African nations to build a promising future. The successful completion of the project, executed over 42 months at a cost of approximately $2.9 billion and with a power generation capacity of 2,115 megawatts, highlights the potential of Egyptian companies in implementing large-scale projects internationally.

Madbouly praised the Egyptian consortium, Arab Contractors and Elsewedy, for their role in constructing one of Africa's largest dams. He expressed hope for leveraging the project's success to enhance bilateral cooperation, particularly in economic sectors, increasing trade, and encouraging investment.

He underscored the importance of private sector participation in promising economic sectors, referencing President El Sisi's visit to Dar es Salaam on June 18, which facilitated business interactions exploring opportunities in various fields such as construction, transport, agriculture, and energy.

Madbouly acknowledged Tanzania's positive regional positions and reiterated Egypt's aspiration to bolster Tanzania's constructive role in fostering cooperation among Nile Basin countries. He concluded by congratulating the Tanzanian president and people on the achievement, expressing gratitude for their hospitality.
