Egypt and Greece Explore Strengthening Strategic Partnership Amid Regional Tensions

Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty received a phone call on Saturday, August 22, 2026, from Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis where they discussed ways to strengthen Egyptian-Greek relations and regional developments, in light of the strategic partnership and ongoing coordination between the two countries.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the two ministers affirmed their keenness to build on the growing momentum in bilateral relations and expand cooperation in the economic, investment, and energy fields. They also praised the trilateral cooperation mechanism among Egypt, Greece, and Cyprus and expressed their desire to continue cooperation and coordination within the framework of the mechanism in a manner that serves their shared interests.

The discussion also covered regional developments, with both ministers stressing the importance of intensifying diplomatic efforts and supporting political solutions to de-escalate tensions. Abdelatty emphasized the importance of avoiding military escalation, giving priority to the diplomatic track, and safeguarding the security and freedom of international navigation, given the serious repercussions of current tensions on energy security and global trade.

Concerning Lebanon, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's support for Lebanon's sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and national institutions. He called for Israel to comply with the cessation of all military attacks against Lebanon and to fully withdraw from Lebanese territory, thereby strengthening the country's security and stability and preventing the escalation from spreading across the region.

The two ministers also discussed developments in the crisis in Sudan. Abdelatty affirmed Egypt's full support for Sudan's unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national institutions, as well as the importance of launching an inclusive Sudanese-led political process that safeguards the interests of the Sudanese people and ensures that humanitarian aid reaches those in need without obstacles, in coordination with regional and international partners.
