PM Attends Opening of Julius Nyerere Dam and Hydropower Plant in Tanzania

Egypt: Dar es Salaam Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly, representing President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, participated in the opening ceremony of the Julius Nyerere Dam and hydropower plant in Tanzania. The event took place on Saturday, August 22, 2026, and was attended by Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan. This momentous occasion signifies a key development in the collaborative efforts between Egypt and Tanzania.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the Julius Nyerere Dam, situated on the Rufiji River in southern Tanzania, is the largest hydropower project in the country. It is recognized as one of the most significant infrastructure initiatives undertaken by Egyptian firms in Africa. The construction was carried out by the Egyptian consortium comprising Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric.

The dam is set to bolster Tanzania's energy sector, providing a much-needed boost to its economic development. This project highlights the strategic partnership between Egypt and Tanzania and underscores Cairo's increasing involvement in supporting development projects throughout the African continent.
