WB Delegation Hails Performance of Drinking Water Plants in Sohag

Sohag: A World Bank delegation and officials from the Ministry of Local Development recently conducted an inspection tour of several drinking water and wastewater treatment plants in Sohag Governorate, Upper Egypt. The delegation was accompanied by Mohamed Salah El-Din Abdel Ghaffar, Chairman of the Sohag Drinking Water and Wastewater Company.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the officials praised the performance and operation of the facilities they visited, which were constructed as part of a local development program in Upper Egypt. They noted that these facilities are among the best they have seen nationwide due to their adherence to relevant standards for operation and maintenance.

The tour included a visit to Al-Hagarsa sewage treatment plant, which has a design capacity of 2,500 cubic meters per day, and the Beit Allam drinking water station in Gerga township, with a design capacity of 57 liters per second. Abdel Ghaffar mentioned that these projects were funded by the Local Development Program in Upper Egypt.

The Al-Hagarsa plant, which has received an international certificate for sustainable technical management, features two pumping stations, discharge lines, a tertiary treatment plant, a treatment farm, and gravity networks.

Regarding the Beit Allam station, which serves approximately 30,000 citizens, Abdel Ghaffar explained that it includes a water intake point, a main purification unit with an underground tank, sedimentation and clarification basins, a chlorine chamber, sand filters, a building for a sludge drying system, and another for power generation.

The station also features a 2,750-meter-long raw water transmission line and a 50-meter-long water discharge line. The delegation members highlighted that these projects exemplify the development in the utilities and basic services sector in Upper Egypt, commending the governorate's dedication to implementing projects that significantly improve public services in line with sustainable development goals.
