Planning Minister Reviews Egypt’s Strategy for Diversifying Clean Energy Sources

Davos: Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, participated in a high-level session on nuclear energy in Africa, held as part of the activities of the Davos Forum 2026, to discuss the vital role of clean nuclear energy in supporting the continent's ambitions for a just transition, and the importance of innovative financing and effective international cooperation to implement those ambitions.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the session was attended by notable figures including Daniel Marokane, Group CEO of Eskom; Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Minister of Electricity and Energy of South Africa; and Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, alongside other African leaders and energy experts.

During the session, Dr. Rania Al-Mashat emphasized that nuclear energy is a clean, low-carbon energy source that is essential for the sustainable energy mix in Africa, particularly given the rising electricity demand. She highlighted Egypt's strategy to diversify its energy sources, including renewable energy from solar, wind, and hydropower, alongside nuclear energy, to enhance energy security and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

Dr. Al-Mashat reviewed the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant project, describing it as a major national development initiative in Egypt and Africa. The project aims to generate clean electricity while driving economic growth, creating jobs, and facilitating technology transfer and industrial development.

She further elaborated on how the El Dabaa project supports infrastructure efficiency, strengthens supply chains, and enhances grid stability upon operation. Dr. Al-Mashat also stressed the importance of regional and international cooperation in developing Africa's nuclear energy sector, advocating for experience exchange and partnership building.

The Egyptian experience, particularly through the El Dabaa project, serves as a model for integrating nuclear energy into a balanced energy mix that fosters economic growth and contributes to climate and sustainable development goals in Africa.
