Kampala: Acting on the directives of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty met with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations and exchange views on issues of mutual interest. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Second Extraordinary Summit of Troop-Contributing Countries to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), held in Uganda's capital Kampala.
According to State Information Service Egypt, during the meeting, Abdelatty conveyed President Sisi's greetings to President Museveni, reaffirming Egypt's pride in the longstanding and close historical ties between the two countries. He also highlighted the growing momentum in bilateral relations, reflected in the exchange of high-level visits, most recently President Sisi's visit to Kampala last May.
For his part, President Museveni extended his greetings and appreciation to President Sisi. He praised President Sisi's constructive role in promoting peace and stability across Africa and the Middle East, underscoring Uganda's commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation with Egypt in light of the longstanding historical ties between the two nations.
Regarding bilateral relations, the foreign minister underscored the importance of enhancing trade, economic and investment cooperation between the two countries across various fields, particularly in the sectors of infrastructure, energy, mining, agriculture, water resources management, and pharmaceuticals. He urged to continue the efforts to expand the Egyptian Medical Center in the city of Jinja.
He renewed the invitation extended to President Museveni to participate in the African Union Coordination Summit, which will be hosted by Egypt on 4 October 2026, as well as the African Business Forum to be held on the sidelines of the summit. Concerning water security, Abdelatty stressed the importance of cooperation and integration over the Nile River to achieve mutual benefit and shared interests.
He underscored the importance of adhering to the principles of consensus and cooperation among the brotherly Southern Nile Basin countries to restore inclusiveness within the Nile Basin Initiative and reject unilateral actions in the Eastern Nile Basin. Abdelatty commended Uganda's efforts in leading the consultative process of the Nile Basin Initiative, as well as the measures endorsed by the Initiative's Ministerial Council to restore inclusiveness and consensus and advance development projects that serve common interests, in accordance with international law and in a manner that safeguards the interests of all Nile Basin countries.
Regarding regional issues, the two sides exchanged views on ways to promote peace, security, and development across the African continent, particularly in Sudan, Somalia, and eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The two sides agreed to enhance coordination at both the bilateral and multilateral levels in a manner that serves their shared interests and contributes to supporting stability and development across the African continent.
