Egyptian Minister Highlights Climate Change Challenges at AMCOW Session in Dakar

Dakar: Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Dr. Hani Sewilam participated in the 14th Ordinary Session of the General Assembly of the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW), which took place in the Senegalese capital. Sewilam emphasized Egypt's dedication to building on the achievements of AMCOW during its presidency from 2023 to 2025, aiming for significant progress in addressing water-related challenges across Africa.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Dr. Sewilam highlighted the urgent issues facing the African continent due to climate change, including floods, droughts, and hurricanes, which are affecting tens of thousands of citizens and the infrastructure that provides water services. He reiterated Egypt's efforts to elevate the global status of water and its advocacy for necessary funding to support the water sector in African nations.

Dr. Sewilam pointed out the need for further action to realize the African Union's Agenda 2063. He called for enhanced water and sanitation services, climate-resilient planning, improved water management, and bolstered data management and information exchange capacities among member states.

Prior to the General Assembly, Dr. Sewilam held a consultative meeting with Dr. Cheikh Tidjane Gaye, Senegal's Minister of Water and Sanitation. The discussions focused on shared interests and strategies to support the activities of AMCOW in serving African countries effectively.
