Egypt Urges Swift Gaza Ceasefire as Death Toll Tops 56,000

Cairo: Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Minister Badr Abdelatty said on Saturday 28/6/2025 that Egypt is intensifying efforts to reach a swift ceasefire agreement in Gaza, stressing the urgency of halting the bloodshed among Palestinian civilians.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Abdelatty addressed a joint press conference in Cairo with Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger, highlighting Egypt's active role in pursuing a ceasefire to stop the bloodshed of innocent Palestinians. His statements were made in response to a question from the Middle East News Agency (MENA) regarding US President Donald Trump's recent comments suggesting a potential ceasefire agreement in Gaza could be reached as early as this week.

Abdelatty reported that the number of Palestinians killed has surpassed 56,000, with women and children making up approximately 70% of the death toll. He expressed concern over the ongoing atrocities occurring in full view of the international community, with no significant action being taken to halt them.

He urged a more active US role, noting that trilateral efforts by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States have recently intensified with the aim of building on momentum generated by the ceasefire in the Iran file, and redirecting focus back to Gaza. Abdelatty criticized Israeli policies, describing them as illogical and futile, with daily killings becoming an end in themselves.

Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to ending the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, particularly addressing the use of starvation as a form of collective punishment. He expressed optimism that the current diplomatic efforts would lead to an immediate ceasefire, facilitating Egypt's plans to host an international conference on early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza as part of the relevant Arab-Islamic plan.
