Egypt Recovers 25 Rare Smuggled Artifacts

Cairo: Egypt has successfully recovered 25 looted Egyptian antiques, thanks to the efforts of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Minister Badr Abdelatty. These artifacts, which hold significant historical and artistic value, were smuggled abroad and have now been repatriated through the Egyptian Consulate General in New York.According to State Information Service Egypt, Abdelatty actively participated in the Committee for the Recovery of Smuggled Antiquities, a joint initiative by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. This committee underscores Egypt's commitment to retrieving its smuggled heritage and restoring it to its rightful place.The recovered items include a diverse range of artifacts such as stone and wooden coffin lids, funerary masks crafted from pottery and gilded wood, an alabaster vessel, and a portrait of a woman from Fayum, which showcases the artistry of the Greco-Roman era. The collection also features jewelry made from various metals, a ra re gold coin from the reign of Ptolemy I, and small bronze and stone statues depicting elements of Egyptian culture and art from different historical periods.The successful return of these artifacts was achieved through a collaborative effort involving the Egyptian Consulate General in New York, the New York City District Attorney's Office, US security agencies, and negotiations with individual owners. The Cultural Sector of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also played a crucial role in this endeavor.
