Addis Ababa: The African Union Commission (AUC) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) have expressed their support for the recent Joint Statement released by the Quad, which includes the Foreign Ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States, concerning the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
According to EMM, the African Union and IGAD have welcomed the Quad's call for swift humanitarian access and civilian protection, along with a proposed three-month humanitarian truce to be facilitated through the Jeddah process. This initiative is seen as an initial step toward a lasting cessation of hostilities. The stance of the Quad is in full alignment with the African Union and IGAD's strategies for peace in Sudan.
The African Union and IGAD have reiterated their willingness to collaborate with the Quad, the Sudanese population, and other stakeholders to bring an end to the conflict, safeguard Sudan's sovereignty and unity, and promote a civilian-led political transition. In pursuit of these goals, the African Union and IGAD, in partnership with the League of Arab States, the United Nations, and the European Union, are set to organize a renewed series of discussions with Sudanese civilian groups this October. These talks aim to foster unity among Sudanese factions and lay the groundwork for a comprehensive Sudanese dialogue and transition to a civilian-led constitutional government.
Both the African Union and IGAD, in agreement with the Quad, assert that a military solution is not viable for the Sudanese crisis. They are eager to work alongside the Quad to bring about an end to the conflict and to restore Sudan to a civilian-led constitutional governance structure.
