Cairo: Egypt's plastics industry has recorded an unprecedented growth rate of about 16% in recent months, underscoring its expanding role in supporting the national economy, Khaled Abou El-Makarem, Head of the Export Council for Chemicals and Fertilizers, said on Friday.
According to State Information Service Egypt, speaking at the opening of the 20th editions of the Plastics and EGYPlast exhibitions, Abou El-Makarem highlighted that the sector is among the fastest-growing industries in Egypt. It has attracted strong local and foreign investment, contributing to higher export revenues and foreign currency inflows.
He noted that plastic product exports have reached approximately $2.4 billion, while total exports from the chemicals and fertilizers sector stood at about $9.5 billion. Abou El-Makarem emphasized that this sector is a key pillar in Egypt's plan to increase overall exports to $145 billion in the coming years.
Abou El-Makarem also pointed out Egypt's competitive advantages, including its trade agreements and improving investment climate. He noted rising foreign investment in plastics and growing interest from international companies as Egypt positions itself as a regional industrial hub.
