FM Urges Stronger CEN-SAD Role to Tackle Terrorism, Illegal Migration

Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty on Thursday August 6, 2026 discussed in a meeting with Executive Secretary of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) Ado Elhadji Abdiu ways of strengthening the bloc's role and developing its institutional mechanisms to bolster security and stability across the Sahel-Saharan region.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the meeting took place on the sidelines of Abdelatty's visit to Chad's capital, N'Djamena. Abdelatty stressed the importance of revitalizing the regional grouping and maximizing the use of its capabilities, outlining Egypt's vision for its priorities, with a focus on peace and security, particularly counterterrorism, combating illegal migration, and strengthening the security capacities of member states to address the region's main challenges.

He also underscored the need to make greater use of the bloc's existing mechanisms, particularly the Sahel-Saharan Counter-Terrorism Centre in Cairo. The Minister reaffirmed Egypt's full support for efforts to combat terrorism in West Africa and the Sahel, stressing the need for a comprehensive approach that combines security and development to tackle the threat.
