Water Resources Minister Engages in Strategic Talks with Prince Hassan bin Talal on Egypt-Jordan Cooperation

Amman: On the sidelines of the "Seventh Arab Water Week" held in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, His Excellency Dr. Hani Sewilam, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, met with His Highness Prince Hassan bin Talal. The meeting also included the presence of His Excellency Ambassador Mohamed Samir, Egypt's Ambassador to Amman, and Dr. Marwan Al-Ruqad, Chairman of the Islamic Network for Water Resources Development.According to State Information Service Egypt, the discussions focused on strengthening relations between the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation and the Jordanian Ministry of Water. They explored ways to enhance cooperation to implement various projects under the "Water-Food-Energy-Environment Nexus" (WEFE NEXUS) and considered potential collaboration through the Islamic Network for Development and Management of Water Resources.Dr. Sewilam highlighted the importance of desalination for intensive food production as a future solution to water challenges in the Arab region. He noted that efforts should be made to reduce energy costs in desalination to ensure economic viability. He also mentioned preparations for a regional project involving Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, aiming to link water, energy, food, and the environment to benefit from shared experiences in desalination.The meeting included discussions on major projects for treating agricultural wastewater in Egypt, such as the New Delta stations, Bahr Al-Baqar, and Al-Mahsameh. These projects aim to contribute approximately 5 billion cubic meters annually of treated agricultural wastewater to Egypt's water balance by 2026. Additionally, they considered ways to exchange experiences between Egypt and Jordan in this domain.The discussion also touched on the significance of subsurface drainage projects and their impact on crop productivity and quality. The importance of scientific research collaboration between Egypt and Jordan was underscored to enhance reliance on crops that can tolerate salinity and drought.The meetin g emphasized the need for implementing projects to adapt to climate change's negative impacts, such as protecting Egypt's northern coasts. It highlighted the responsibility of developed countries, as contributors to climate change, to provide funding in grants to support Arab countries. Strengthening cooperation among Arab countries was deemed essential for exchanging experiences and success stories in climate change adaptation, alongside enhancing collaboration in nature-based solutions for water projects.
