Cairo: Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly inspected development works in downtown Cairo on Saturday, May 16, 2026, as part of a broader government plan to revive the capital's historic and Khedival districts. During his tour, he reviewed the progress of various phases of the development projects aimed at enhancing the overall visual appeal of the city's major squares and streets.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber announced that several phases of the project had been completed. These included improvements in key areas such as Tahrir Square, Talaat Harb Square, and Qasr El Nil Street. The Governor highlighted that the restoration efforts focused on dozens of historic building facades to bring back their original architectural character. Additionally, a fourth phase, extending toward 26 July Street, was currently underway and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Madbouly also visited the Al-Alfy district and the Old Opera area. Authorities are working to restore the cultural identity of downtown Cairo by renovating facades, upgrading lighting systems, and enhancing public spaces. The development plans also include converting the administrative building of the Opera Garage into a hotel to increase tourism and investment in central Cairo.
Mohammed Abo Seada, Head of the National Organization for Urban Harmony, stated that the organization continues to supervise the restoration and urban development projects. Their efforts aim to preserve Cairo's architectural heritage and restore the historic capital's visual identity.
