Cairo: House of Representatives Speaker Hisham Badawi called for a unified Arab legislative framework to strengthen digital sovereignty, data protection, and cybersecurity, saying rapid global transformations have made the issue a strategic necessity. Addressing the 8th Conference of the Arab Parliament and Speakers of Arab Legislative Councils in Cairo, Badawi emphasized that digital sovereignty has become central to national security as data and digital infrastructure increasingly shape state power.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Badawi urged Arab parliaments to adopt binding legislation supporting secure digital infrastructure, local data hosting, early-warning mechanisms against cross-border cyberattacks, and greater investment in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and digital skills. He highlighted Egypt's efforts to build a modern digital economy through upgraded telecommunications infrastructure, cybersecurity measures, personal data protection legislation, and the launch of a government data and cloud computing center. Badawi stressed that regional cooperation is essential to safeguarding Arab digital interests.
