Cairo: The Health and Population Ministry has announced that data from its electronic birth and death registration system indicate a continued decline in births across the nation from 2018 through 2025. Health and Population Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar stated on Sunday, January 11, 2026, that this trend signifies the success of national family planning and reproductive health initiatives, expanded services, and the increasing public awareness of planned and responsible childbearing.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the ministry's data revealed that births decreased in most of Egypt's governorates in 2025. Only nine governorates experienced slight increases, ranging from 0.3% to 5%, compared to 2024. This data highlights the overall effectiveness of the programs in place aimed at managing population growth.
Furthermore, the data pointed out that caesarean deliveries remain notably high, accounting for about 80% of total births in 2025. The prevalence of caesarean sections exceeded 90% in regions like Kafr El Sheikh, Port Said, and Gharbia, while it dropped below 60% in Matrouh and South Sinai. The ministry is actively working to reduce the number of medically unjustified caesarean births and to enhance maternal and child healthcare services.
Deputy Health Minister Amr Kandil emphasized that the population growth reached approximately 1.34 million people in 2025. He highlighted that controlling this growth is crucial for achieving sustainable development goals, underlining the importance of continuous efforts in population management and healthcare improvements.
