Egypt Secures Pound 688 Million from Global Green Bonds Initiative for Climate Strategy

Cairo: Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment Dr. Manal Awad has reported on the Ministry of Environment's strides in climate action as detailed in a 2025 report.According to State Information Service Egypt, the Ministry successfully secured pound 688 million from the Global Green Bonds Initiative, funded by the European Investment Bank and the United Nations Development Programme. This funding will bolster Egypt's National Climate Change Strategy 2050, focusing on climate finance infrastructure and innovative financing mechanisms with an emphasis on adaptation.The initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions by 10 million tons and improve climate resilience for 8.3 million people. Egypt's active participation in international climate dialogues was also highlighted, including contributions to the 30th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, and other significant global forums.Representing President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, Dr. Awad engaged in negotiations with various international groups to discuss emissions reduction, adaptation, technology transfer, and finance. The report also noted Egypt's progress on its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0) and other strategic documents set for submission to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.Efforts are ongoing to develop a National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and a digital monitoring, reporting, and verification system, with assistance from the World Bank and German Development Cooperation. Additionally, Egypt's collaboration with international bodies like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the Slovak Republic emphasizes its commitment to environmental protection and climate change mitigation.The Ministry's Ozone Unit has also been active, coordinating on the regulation of methyl bromide and overseeing training initiatives for air-conditioning and refrigeration sectors, further illustrating Egypt's comprehensive approach to environmental sustainability.
