Cairo: Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty emphasized Egypt's unwavering support for the Palestinian Authority (PA) as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people during a high-stakes call with Palestinian Deputy President Hussein Al-Sheikh.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the call served as a critical follow-up to recent high-level meetings in Cairo, focusing on the implementation of the transitional phase for governance and security in the Palestinian territories. A central theme of the discussion was the transition to the second stage of the peace plan outlined by U.S. President Donald Trump. Abdelatty underscored Egypt's commitment to empowering the PA, ensuring it is fully equipped to assume its administrative and security responsibilities across all Palestinian territories, with a specific focus on the Gaza Strip.
The discussions also highlighted the use of UN Security Council Resolution 2803 as the legal and operational framework for the transitional period. Additionally, Egypt supports the formation of a Palestinian technocratic committee to manage civilian affairs and maintain territorial unity. Abdelatty expressed concern over the escalating violence in the West Bank, condemning incursions, civilian targeting, and settlement expansions, which threaten regional stability and a viable political path forward.
Hussein Al-Sheikh praised Egypt's role in the diplomatic process and lauded the continuous coordination with Cairo. He reaffirmed the PA's commitment to a just settlement based on international legitimacy, aiming to establish an independent state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. The call concluded with both sides agreeing to maintain intensive daily coordination to ensure the humanitarian and political rights of the Palestinian people are preserved during the implementation of the new regional roadmap.
