Cairo: Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment Manal Awad inaugurated Egypt's first-ever mobile slaughterhouse on Saturday, marking a significant step in the country's efforts to enhance meat processing capabilities in remote regions.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the project was designed and funded under the supervision of the Ministry of Local Development. It is part of a contract with BAN for Trade Investment Company to establish two fully air-conditioned mobile slaughterhouses. This initiative comes in response to directives from Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli to provide essential infrastructure in areas lacking permanent slaughterhouses.
The newly launched slaughterhouse is a semi-automated facility that integrates European components with local manufacturing. It measures 12 meters in length, 3 meters in width, and 4 meters in height, equipped with a meat washing unit and a seal storage chamber. The facility boasts a daily slaughter capacity of approximately 100 cows and buffaloes.
Awad announced that the mobile slaughterhouse will initially serve El Salloum in the Matrouh governorate. Its mobility allows it to be deployed to other remote and border areas as needed, particularly during festivals and high-demand seasons across various governorates.
The minister emphasized the ministry's ongoing commitment to ensuring the provision of safe and healthy meat to citizens. This includes reinforcing supervision of slaughterhouses and addressing local market demands. Additionally, 20 government slaughterhouses have been delivered to different governorates and are now operational to better serve the populace.
