Cairo: Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly has emphasized that the gradual transition toward electric vehicles is pivotal in constructing a modern and sustainable transport system, aimed at harmonizing economic growth with environmental conservation while optimizing the use of Egypt's energy resources. This announcement was made during his meeting with Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk, focusing on the government's strategies to support the transition to electric vehicles as part of the state's broader vision to enhance resource efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Cabinet Spokesman Mohamed el Homosany stated that the finance minister outlined the government's strategic goals to expedite the shift to electric vehicles. The primary objectives include rationalizing public expenditure and facilitating the transition to clean energy, thereby decreasing the country's dependency on imported petroleum products. Kouchouk stressed the importance of upgrading the government's vehicle fleet to serve as a benchmark for the green transport strategy, highlighting the crucial role of government transportation in achieving national environmental targets.
The meeting further explored a strategic vision for developing the necessary infrastructure and digital systems to support the proliferation of electric vehicles in Egypt. The proposed plans emphasize operational efficiency through two key aspects: the expansion of smart and fast-charging stations and the classification of vehicles based on usage requirements. Additionally, the strategy involves bolstering cybersecurity systems while adhering to international safety standards, contributing to the transition to sustainable transport and reducing carbon emissions.
Kouchouk presented a comparative analysis demonstrating the anticipated financial savings from switching from conventional vehicles to electric ones, underscoring significant economic benefits. In conclusion, Prime Minister Madbouly instructed regular coordination with relevant ministries and authorities to expedite the government's transition to electric vehicles, ensure the removal of any impediments, and achieve state objectives in spending rationalization and energy efficiency improvement. He also directed the Ministry of Finance to initiate negotiations with electric vehicle dealers to secure favorable deals, paving the way for acquiring the first batch of electric vehicles for government officials, replacing traditional fuel-powered cars.
