Moscow: Egypt's Ambassador in Moscow, Nazih El-Nagari, recently held a meeting with Sherif Gad, President of the Egyptian Association of Alumni of Russian and Soviet Universities and Secretary-General of the Egyptian-Russian Friendship Society. They discussed the revival of the society's activities following the establishment of a new board of directors, which includes Ibrahim Kamel as president and Izzat Saad as vice president.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the meeting took place at the Egyptian embassy in Moscow and was attended by Mohamed El-Sergany, the cultural counselor and head of the educational mission in Russia. During the discussions, Gad emphasized the positive reception the society's revival has received within Egyptian cultural circles. He noted that several prominent Egyptian cultural figures have joined the society, signaling a renewed interest in fostering connections with Russian culture.
Gad commended the Egyptian embassy's active role, particularly in supporting the approximately 18,000 Egyptian students in Russian universities. He highlighted that many alumni have joined the friendship society upon returning to Egypt, thus strengthening the cultural ties between the two nations.
During the meeting, Gad expressed the board's intention to establish direct communication channels with its Russian counterpart, the Russian-Egyptian friendship society. This initiative aims to enhance bilateral relations at the civil society level and promote collaborative cultural and humanitarian projects.
The meeting reflects a growing interest from both countries in leveraging cultural societies to bolster Egypt-Russia relations. This aligns with their broader strategy to expand bilateral cooperation beyond political and economic spheres, placing significant emphasis on cultural exchange as a means to bring the peoples of both nations closer together.
