Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty highlighted the robust relations between Egypt and Switzerland, celebrating their 90th anniversary this year. He expressed optimism for more cooperation in political, economic, and commercial sectors.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Abdelatty made these remarks during a meeting with Swiss Minister of Justice and Police Beat Jans. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral ties and consulting on regional and international issues of common interest. Abdelatty welcomed collaboration in development, including a new Egypt-Switzerland cooperation program for 2025-2028, which will cover areas like good governance, sustainable economic development, and migration.
The meeting also underscored the establishment of the Joint Economic Committee and Chamber of Commerce, which aims to boost trade and investment between the two nations. Abdelatty emphasized the significance of increasing trade volume and encouraging Swiss investments in infrastructure sectors such as railways and renewable energy. He noted Swiss involvement in major national projects, including the Suez Canal Economic Zone and new urban developments.
The discussions extended to cooperation in technical education, vocational training, tourism, and migration. Abdelatty highlighted Egypt's initiatives in combating irregular migration and hosting nearly 10 million foreigners, underscoring the need for a comprehensive approach to address migration at its roots.
Furthermore, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's dedication to preserving national heritage and recovering smuggled artifacts. He mentioned that over 70 artifacts have been reclaimed, with ongoing efforts to restore all stolen pieces, especially following the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum and other museums in the past decade.
On regional matters, Abdelatty briefed Jans on Egypt's role in consolidating the Sharm El Sheikh Peace Agreement, ensuring its full implementation, achieving a lasting ceasefire, and alleviating humanitarian suffering in Gaza. He also stressed the importance of a ceasefire in Sudan, advocating for a comprehensive political process to maintain Sudan's unity, sovereignty, and stability. He condemned violations in Al-Fashir, urging international efforts to support the Sudanese people and their institutions.
Jans acknowledged Egypt's critical role in the region, commending its organization of the Sharm El Sheikh Peace Conference and contributions to regional security and stability. He expressed Switzerland's gratitude for Egypt hosting large numbers of refugees and noted that bilateral cooperation on migration would enhance ties and joint efforts to support vulnerable populations.
