Cairo: Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Dr. Hani Sewilam met with Dutch Ambassador to Egypt Peter Mollema to discuss ongoing and future collaboration in water resource management. The meeting, held on August 4, 2025, focused on the joint project aimed at modernizing irrigation techniques in Upper Egypt. This initiative is implemented in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and financed by the Dutch government. Both parties highlighted the necessity of expediting project activities, particularly the shift to modern irrigation systems in the regions of Asyut, Sohag, and Qena, to enhance agricultural productivity and improve farmers' livelihoods.According to State Information Service Egypt, the discussions also included preparations for signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Dutch organization Invest International. This MoU will facilitate a feasibility study to identify vulnerable spots along the Mediterranean coast. The goal is to develop eco-friendly sand nourishmen t projects aimed at protecting shorelines.Moreover, both parties deliberated on plans to commemorate 50 years of Egyptian-Dutch water cooperation. This milestone will be celebrated with various activities during the upcoming Cairo Water Week in October. They also discussed steps to renew the Memorandum of Understanding governing the Egyptian-Dutch High-Level Water Committee. This agreement encompasses collaboration in areas such as water management, coastal zone protection, and climate change mitigation.
