Cairo: Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, the most prestigious Sunni body in the world, organized a celebration marking the International Day of Human Fraternity on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. This day is observed annually to commemorate the signing of the historic Document on Human Fraternity.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the document was signed in Abu Dhabi in 2019 by the Grand Imam Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Sheikh of Al-Azhar, and former Pope Francis of the Vatican. This initiative is part of Al-Azhar's efforts to promote global values of human coexistence and foster dialogue and peace among followers of different religions and cultures.
The celebration took place at the headquarters of Al-Azhar and was attended by several notable figures, including Dr. Mohamed Abdel Rahman Al-Duweini, Deputy of Al-Azhar; Dr. Salama Dawoud, President of Al-Azhar University; and His Grace Bishop Ermia.
Dr. Mohamed Abdel Rahman Al-Duweini emphasized that the anniversary of the Document on Human Fraternity marks a pivotal milestone in contemporary human history. He highlighted its significance as one of the most important ethical documents of the modern era.
He stated that the document was introduced during a time of global turmoil, delivering a clear message that religions can serve as bridges for peace rather than causes of conflict. He asserted that authentic religious values can save the world from crises if properly invoked and practiced.
Dr. Al-Duweini explained that the document represents Al-Azhar's civilizational vision, which is based on compassion, peace, and respect for diversity. He pointed out that since its inception, Islam has recognized difference as a universal law and has aimed for mutual acquaintance and integration.
