Youth Ministry Commemorates 70th Anniversary of Historic Bandung Conference

Cairo: As part of the activities of the fifth edition of the Nasser Fellowship for International Leadership, held under the auspices of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic, the Ministry of Youth and Sports-represented by the South-South Cooperation Office-commemorated the 70th anniversary of the historic Bandung Conference. The conference was held in April 1955 in Bandung, Indonesia, with the participation of 29 Asian and African countries. Its aim was to establish a new vision for international cooperation beyond colonial domination and the rivalries of major powers. Leading figures included the late Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser, Indian leader Jawaharlal Nehru, Indonesian President Ahmed Sukarno, and other icons of national liberation movements.According to State Information Service Egypt, the Ministry affirmed that the Bandung Conference was a pivotal turning point in modern political history. It solidified the principles of non-alignment, enhanced cooperation am ong countries of the Global South, and contributed to their ability to achieve political and economic independence. The conference also marked the beginning of an international movement based on solidarity, cultural exchange, and joint efforts to confront developmental and colonial challenges.The Ministry stressed the South-South Cooperation Office's commitment to continuing the legacy of the Bandung Conference through the implementation of youth programs and initiatives aimed at strengthening cultural and knowledge exchange among young people from the Global South. These efforts include providing platforms for constructive dialogue and building partnerships that support sustainable development goals and social justice. It also highlighted that the Nasser Fellowship for International Leadership is one of the key tools to achieve this vision, by bringing together youth from three continents and equipping them with skills and knowledge that enhance opportunities for cooperation among developing countries and promote the values of solidarity and experience-sharing.The Ministry reaffirmed that the South-South Cooperation Office is working to adopt the philosophy and goals of the Bandung Conference, which calls for the activation of cooperation among southern countries away from domination and dependency, and for building a more just and equitable global system. Empowering youth and supporting their roles in development, sports, and culture will remain a top priority in the coming phase to strengthen bonds of cooperation and partnership among the peoples of the Global South at both regional and international levels.
