Petroleum Minister Orders Expedited Development of Harmattan Offshore Gas Field

Port said: Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi has mandated an acceleration in the development of the Harmattan offshore gas field, aiming to connect it to production facilities more swiftly to enhance Egypt's domestic gas supplies.

According to State Information Service Egypt, during a visit to the Pharaonic Petroleum Company's production site in Port Said, Badawi emphasized the necessity of exploring all technical solutions that could expedite the project's timeline. This initiative seeks to leverage the field's reserves and production capabilities. The minister assessed the company's drilling, exploration programs, and field development activities in the Mediterranean, with a particular focus on the Harmattan gas field. He underscored the importance of employing advanced technologies in drilling and exploration to improve success rates and optimize Egypt's gas resource utilization.

Badawi also commended the company's safety systems and urged their ongoing enhancement in accordance with international standards, emphasizing the need to uphold the highest safety levels across all work sites. Pharaonic Petroleum Chairman Hossam Zaki reported that the company met its production target for the 2025-2026 fiscal year and outlined plans to boost natural gas and condensate production while maximizing existing infrastructure.

The Harmattan field development project aims to produce approximately 200 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, alongside 4,400 barrels per day of petroleum condensates. Zaki mentioned that technical solutions are under review to expedite the field's development schedule. The field's connection to the Hapiya processing facility will be facilitated by a 50-km gas pipeline, with ENPPI as the main contractor, collaborating with Petrojet and Petroleum Marine Services (PMS).

Additionally, the company explored exploration and production opportunities in the Ras El Bar, North Damietta, and Al-Borg areas. Plans for the Tort-6 well include commencing production before year-end, targeting a rate of 40 million cubic feet of gas per day. Exploration plans also involve drilling the West Atoll exploratory well using the Valaris DS-12 rig, with investments of approximately $91 million and a target depth of 6,000 meters, as well as the Benio well in the Ras El Bar area.
