Irrigation Minister Monitors Advancement in Modernizing Egypt’s Agricultural Water Management

Cairo: Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam convened with ministry officials to review the advancement of a project aimed at modernizing water management in Egypt's agricultural sector in collaboration with Spain. The meeting, held on Sunday, August 15, 2026, focused on integrating innovative technologies into the existing water management framework.According to State Information Service Egypt, Sewilam emphasized the importance of smart water resources management, which forms a central component of the 'Water 2.0' system. The ministry is currently employing various smart management tools such as mathematical models, digital platforms, machine-learning programs, satellite imagery, and drone photography to ensure optimal management of water resources.The project is designed to enhance water resources management by leveraging Spanish technical expertise. It aims to generate social and economic benefits, improve water planning and management, promote integrated water resources management, r aise irrigation efficiency, increase the use of agricultural drainage water, and preserve water quality.Furthermore, the initiative seeks to bolster cooperation between Egyptian and Spanish specialized institutions and research centers with significant experience in water management projects. This will be achieved through expert visits, technical exchanges, and the implementation of expertise gained from similar projects.The project also includes the introduction of smart irrigation systems in five areas within the governorates of Alexandria, Beheira, Qalyubia, Dakahlia, and Sohag. These systems will be customized to meet the specific needs of each area and farmer, considering economic, social, and environmental factors. The objective is to promote the use of smart irrigation technologies that enhance productivity per unit of water, with plans to expand their application to additional regions in the future.
