Petroleum Minister and APPO Chief Discuss Egypt-Africa Energy Integration Efforts

Cairo: Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi discussed with the Secretary-General of the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO), Farid Ghazali, the means to support Egyptian-African integration efforts in the energy industry. This meeting took place on Monday, May 11, 2026.

According to State Information Service Egypt, during the meeting, the minister proposed organizing a ministerial session for energy ministers of APPO member states on the sidelines of the African Union Mid-Year Coordination Summit. This summit is scheduled to be hosted in the city of El Alamein next June. The session aims to provide a platform for dialogue and coordination on the continent’s energy priorities, support development projects, and strengthen African integration in the energy sector.

The minister welcomed the APPO secretary-general on his first visit to Cairo since taking office and praised the organization’s efforts to foster collaboration among African states. He emphasized the importance of maximizing the continent’s resource utilization to advance economic development and secure energy needs.

Badawi highlighted the significance of joint action to address challenges facing Africa’s energy sector, particularly in securing financing for infrastructure projects. He stressed that the continent has vast opportunities and resources that require deeper cooperation and exchange of expertise among member states.

The meeting also reviewed the latest updates regarding the launch of the African Energy Bank, one of the organization’s strategic initiatives, and its expected role in financing oil and gas projects across the continent.

Both parties underlined the importance of strengthening regional cooperation through training centers and capacity-building programs. They emphasized benefiting from Egypt’s expertise in training and supporting the qualification of African human resources, as well as the transfer of technical know-how.

The minister noted that Egypt has a strong base of national companies specialized in implementing oil and gas infrastructure projects. These include ENPPI, Petrojet, EBRD-related EPC firms, Egypt Gas, and the Egyptian Drilling Company, which have successfully executed major projects inside and outside Egypt. These companies enhance their ability to contribute to energy and infrastructure projects across Africa and support development plans and knowledge transfer.

Ghazali expressed appreciation for Egypt’s supportive role in APPO activities. He praised Egypt’s advanced infrastructure and globally reputable national companies and expressed the organization’s aspiration to expand cooperation with Egypt and other member states, particularly in the training fields.

He announced the launch of an African training platform within the continent by the end of this year, commending Egypt’s role in backing joint African action and benefiting from its successful experience in developing the energy sector.
