Irrigation Minister Engages Global Partners to Boost Egypt’s Water Sector

Cairo: Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam engaged with international development partners, including representatives of development banks, embassies of several countries, and UN organizations, under the joint presidency of the European Union and the German Embassy, to discuss strategies for enhancing coordination and partnership to support Egypt's water sector priorities. This discussion took place within the framework of the ministry's second-generation water system strategy 2.0.According to State Information Service Egypt, the Minister emphasized the ministry's focus on strengthening international and regional partnerships and leveraging the expertise, financing, and technical support offered by development partners. He pointed out that such cooperation is crucial for implementing priority projects, managing water resources sustainably, enhancing resilience to climate change, and improving Egypt's water security.The ministry has completed an integrated portfolio of priority projects following a high-level workshop attended by ministry leaders and representatives of its affiliated bodies, Sewilam revealed. The workshop aimed to identify future needs and projects that align with the second-generation water system 2.0 strategy, while also preparing these projects for financing through either the state budget or development partners and funding institutions.The minister highlighted that the portfolio preparation was based on a clear methodology that involved unifying project preparation templates, analyzing sectoral priorities, completing technical data, and ranking projects according to strategic priorities. This methodology also aligned with the water system 2.0 strategy's pillars, such as digital transformation, smart water management, resilient infrastructure, climate adaptation, governance, capacity building, awareness raising, and strengthening Egypt's role in the regional and international water sector.Additionally, the strategy includes expanding water treatment and desalination projects to boost food production and improve the efficiency of using non-conventional water resources. Sewilam reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to integrating governing pillars into future projects, focusing on human resource development, governance principles, digital transformation, and smart water management. He noted that the ministry is utilizing its distinguished technical cadres to support institutional and technical development efforts.
