Cairo: Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, emphasized that Egypt is a global leader in newborn hearing screening. This announcement was made during a phone call with Extra News, where Abdel Ghaffar highlighted the country's achievements in this critical healthcare initiative.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the initiative aimed at treating hearing loss and impairment among newborns has successfully provided comprehensive screening coverage for all newborns since its inception in 2019. Abdel Ghaffar reported that approximately 9.5 million children have been screened under this program, highlighting the establishment of a robust healthcare system based on thorough field screening.
Screening efforts are conducted through 3,825 health units spread across the nation, targeting newborns from one day to 28 days old. Abdel Ghaffar noted that the initiative extends beyond initial screening to include necessary treatment, which plays a crucial role in reducing the burden of hearing disability and improving educational outcomes.
The initiative is also seen as a significant contributor to economic growth by investing in human capital. By treating hearing impairments early, children can fully engage in educational activities and evolve into active members of society. The program's comprehensive approach underscores Egypt's commitment to enhancing the quality of life and education for its youngest citizens.
