Health Ministry and World Bank Focus on Advancing Egypt’s Healthcare Projects

Cairo: Deputy Minister of Health and Population Abla El-Alfy met with Sherin Varkey, the World Bank Group's Regional Director for Health, Nutrition and Population, to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation and review ongoing projects aimed at advancing Egypt's healthcare system.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Health Ministry spokesman Hossam Abdel Ghaffar stated that the meeting reviewed the implementation status of current projects, including progress rates, implementation schedules, and financing arrangements. The primary goal was to accelerate execution and ensure the achievement of planned targets.

The discussions centered on the comprehensive health system transformation project and the progress in implementing the Universal Health Insurance System. Topics included its financing and legislative frameworks, as well as mechanisms to expedite implementation and ensure long-term sustainability.

Both parties confirmed the completion of the first phase of the Universal Health Insurance System in six governorates, with a gradual expansion continuing in line with the approved rollout plan. Abdel Ghaffar highlighted that the project relies on three key pillars: accelerating implementation, improving the quality and efficiency of healthcare services, and enhancing the resilience and sustainability of the health system through infrastructure development, public health initiatives, and diversified financing models.

The meeting also reviewed Indonesia's experience in strengthening healthcare systems to leverage international best practices in support of Egypt's health sector reform efforts and its strategic partnership with the World Bank Group.
