Amman: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt's full solidarity with Greece in facing the devastating wildfires that have affected several parts of the country: During a phone call with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, the two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in the fields of energy, electricity interconnection, investment, and trade, Presidential Spokesman Mohamed El Shennawy said.
According to State Information Service Egypt, El-Sisi extended his deepest condolences over the deaths of pilots and firefighters who lost their lives while battling the blazes, praising their courage and sacrifices. The President stressed that Egypt stands with the Greek government and people during this difficult time and is ready to provide all possible support to help Greece contain the fires.
For his part, Mitsotakis expressed his appreciation for Sisi's gesture, saying it reflected the Egyptian President's sincere solidarity and support and highlighted the historic ties and strategic partnership between the two countries. The spokesman said the two sides reaffirmed the strategic nature of Egyptian-Greek relations and their commitment to building on the progress achieved in bilateral ties in recent years.
El-Sisi welcomed the progress made in the Egypt-Greece electricity interconnection project, describing it as a strategic initiative supported by the European Union that would enhance energy security and promote economic integration across the Mediterranean. He also praised ongoing cooperation between the two countries in the areas of labor and migration.
The talks also addressed regional and international developments, with the two leaders expressing converging views on the situation in the Middle East. They stressed the importance of reaching a comprehensive agreement between the United States and Iran to ease tensions, prevent further escalation, and safeguard the security, sovereignty, and stability of Arab countries and the wider region.
El-Sisi also reviewed Egypt's intensive efforts, in coordination with mediators, to implement the Gaza ceasefire agreement and ensure the continued flow of humanitarian aid. He stressed the need for the international community, particularly European countries, to support these efforts and help alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
Mitsotakis praised Egypt's approach of prioritizing political and peaceful solutions to regional crises and affirmed Greece's commitment to maintaining close coordination and consultations with Egypt on issues of mutual concern. El-Sisi welcomed the Greek prime minister's remarks, stressing the importance of continued consultations between the two countries to support security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.
