Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty and Senior Advisor to the US President for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos emphasized, during a phone call on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the importance of supporting Sudan's unity and territorial integrity, as well as the ongoing coordination within the framework of the International Quartet.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the phone call is part of the continued coordination and consultation between Egypt and the US across various fields, reflecting the depth of the strategic partnership between the two countries. Both sides praised the distinguished bilateral relations and affirmed the importance of maintaining close coordination and consultation on regional and international issues of mutual interest.
They discussed several African issues, notably the situation in Sudan and Libya, as well as developments in the Great Lakes region, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Horn of Africa. Regarding the situation in Sudan, both sides reiterated their complete rejection of any attempts to divide the country or harm its stability.
They also renewed their condemnation of the attack on the UN mission headquarters in the city of Kadugli, expressing their full solidarity with the Sudanese people during this critical phase. For his part, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's full support for Sudanese national institutions, stressing the need to launch an effective humanitarian pathway that ensures the unhindered delivery of aid, alongside increasing relief support and enhancing cooperation with the United Nations, the African Union, and humanitarian agencies.
He emphasized the importance of regional and international efforts to support a comprehensive ceasefire and create conditions for launching an inclusive political process that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people for security, stability, and development, while pushing for a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire that guarantees the protection of Sudan's unity and its national institutions.
On the situation in Libya, the foreign minister reiterated Egypt's consistent position in supporting Libya's unity and territorial integrity and the necessity of maintaining the country's national institutions. He stressed the importance of reaching a Libyan-led comprehensive political settlement conducive to simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible, restoring legitimacy to Libyan institutions.
He also reiterated the need for the withdrawal of all foreign forces, foreign fighters, and mercenaries from Libyan territory, as well as the dismantling of armed militias, to contribute to achieving stability and security in Libya and the region.
The phone call also addressed the situation in the Great Lakes region. Minister Abdelatty praised the US efforts that led to the signing of the Washington agreement between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, emphasizing the need to de-escalate the current tensions and implement the terms of the agreement as an essential framework for building trust and easing tensions.
He pointed out Egypt's support for efforts to achieve peace and establish the foundations for reconciliation, paving the way for comprehensive development in the region. The minister reiterated Egypt's full support for all efforts aimed at ensuring security and stability in the region, strengthening good neighborly relations, as well as its readiness to cooperate with all regional and international partners to ensure the implementation and sustainability of the agreement and achieve lasting peace for the people of the region.
