Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty asserted that relations between Egypt and Russia have seen significant improvements, evolving into a strategic partnership with tangible frameworks. This development was highlighted during a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Cairo.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Abdelatty welcomed Lavrov's visit, expressing Egypt's appreciation for the historical ties between the two nations. He emphasized the importance of the second ministerial conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, hosted in Cairo, in enhancing trilateral cooperation involving Egypt, Russia, and Africa. Lavrov is also scheduled to meet President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, alongside other ministers participating in the forum.
Abdelatty praised the progress in the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant project, marking the installation of the reactor pressure vessel for the first nuclear unit as a milestone. He noted the commitment of both nations to maintain the timeline, reflecting strong cooperation in the energy sector. Discussions with Lavrov covered various issues, including increasing trade, agriculture, industry, and infrastructure projects, notably the Russian Industrial Zone in the Suez Canal Economic Zone.
The foreign minister emphasized the strategic partnership, highlighting its role in enhancing security, stability, and development opportunities. He also reiterated Egypt's position on the Palestinian issue, stressing the need for a two-state solution and the importance of international pressure to uphold UN Security Council resolutions.
Lavrov expressed gratitude for Egypt hosting the conference and discussed strengthening cultural ties and educational exchanges. He acknowledged the increase in bilateral trade and the role of major projects like the Aswan High Dam and the Dabaa nuclear plant in symbolizing the depth of relations. Lavrov also addressed international concerns, including the Gaza ceasefire, Syrian sovereignty, and the Yemen crisis, while noting a unified stance with Egypt on these issues.
In response to a question, Abdelatty highlighted the growth in economic and trade ties, emphasizing cooperation in tourism and major projects like the El Dabaa nuclear plant. He expressed optimism for further development in bilateral relations, underscoring the principles of mutual respect and non-interference.
Abdelatty also touched upon efforts to consolidate the Gaza ceasefire and Egypt's engagement with regional and international partners to advance peace plans. He discussed Egypt's diplomatic efforts regarding the Iranian nuclear issue and regional tensions, reaffirming the country's commitment to peaceful resolutions.
Lavrov concluded by acknowledging the positive role of countries like Egypt in addressing global challenges, including the Ukrainian crisis, expressing hope for peaceful settlements through diplomatic efforts.
