Cairo: The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced on Sunday, August 9, 2026, that it had received a report from Sukari Gold Mines Company regarding a rockfall inside one of the tunnels in the underground work area of the Sukari Mine in the Eastern Desert. According to State Information Service Egypt, the preliminary report indicated that the accident resulted in the death of one worker, Abdel Rahman Nabil Mahmoud, and injuries to five others. The injured workers were immediately transported to the One-Day Surgery Hospital in Marsa Alam to receive necessary medical care. Preliminary medical reports indicate that their condition is stable.

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi expressed profound sorrow over the loss of Abdel Rahman Nabil Mahmoud, offering sincere condolences and sympathy to his family, relatives, and colleagues. He also directed that all forms of support and assistance be provided to the bereaved family. Badawi instructed officials to ensure that the injured receive full medical care and that their conditions are closely monitored.

The ministry announced that a committee had been formed to investigate the circumstances and causes of the accident, review occupational health and safety procedures at the mine, and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents. Work in the underground section has been temporarily suspended pending the completion of necessary procedures and verification that all safety requirements are in place before operations resume.

The ministry reaffirmed that the safety and well-being of workers remained its top priority and that it was closely monitoring developments and the condition of the injured.
