Egypt Reaffirms Commitment to Support Sudan Amid Ongoing Crisis

Cairo: Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty affirmed Egypt's unwavering support for the Sudanese government and its territorial integrity during the Russia-Africa summit held in Cairo. Abdelatty emphasized that Egypt would not permit any division or fragmentation of Sudan, nor the collapse of its national institutions.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Abdelatty's statements were made in response to Ahram Online's inquiries regarding the six-point Presidential statement on the Sudan crisis. The statement highlighted that breaches of 'red lines' impacting Sudan's unity and state institutions pose a threat to Egypt's national security, underscoring Egypt's right to act under international law and a joint defense agreement with Sudan.

Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's clear stance, asserting that Cairo would not be lax or delayed in supporting Sudan's legitimate government and institutions. This declaration followed a meeting between Sudanese Transitional Sovereign Council head Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo.

The statement warned that any violations affecting Sudan's unity or state institutions would directly threaten Egypt's national security, which is closely tied to Sudan's stability. Egypt firmly rejected any attempts to divide Sudan or create parallel political entities, affirming its right to take measures supported by international law and the bilateral defense agreement.

Since April 2023, the Sudanese Armed Forces have been engaged in conflict with the Rapid Support Forces militias, resulting in significant casualties, displacement, and famine conditions. Regional and international bodies have condemned the atrocities committed by the RSF against civilians in various parts of Sudan.

Egypt has been actively involved in diplomatic efforts to resolve the Sudanese conflict through its participation in the Quad with the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and the US. Concurrently, Cairo has dispatched urgent humanitarian aid to alleviate the crisis in Sudan.

In response to questions about ongoing meetings in Miami involving senior officials from the US, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, FM Abdelatty described the discussions as constructive. The talks focused on governance, security, and the potential establishment of an international stabilization force for Gaza.

The foreign minister noted that the discussions would also address training Palestinian police and setting up an administrative committee to manage Gaza's affairs. Abdelatty expressed hope for tangible progress in the coming weeks, with Egyptian security officials attending the Miami meeting.
