Cairo: Polling stations opened at 9 a.m. on Saturday, 3/1/2026, for the first day of voting in run-off elections in districts where results were annulled during the first phase of Egypt's parliamentary elections, following rulings by the Supreme Administrative Court.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the vote, the final stage of the House of Representatives elections, covers 49 individual seats contested by 98 candidates across 27 constituencies in 10 governorates that were part of the first phase of the polls. Nearly 14.9 million voters are eligible to cast ballots at 2,230 sub-committees across the 10 governorates. The election will run for two consecutive days under the supervision of judicial authorities, with monitoring by civil society organizations and local and international media.
Members of the State Lawsuits Authority and the Administrative Prosecution Authority, who chair the sub-committees, inspected polling stations early Saturday to ensure all materials were present, including ballot papers, official records, and voter lists. Ballot boxes were opened to show they were empty before being sealed with coded plastic locks. Police forces have been deployed to secure polling stations and their surroundings, aiming to ensure a safe environment for voters.
The National Elections Authority (NEA) announced it has implemented various measures to make voting easier, especially for the elderly and people with disabilities. Most sub-committees are situated on ground floors, and polling centers are equipped with signage featuring QR codes that voters can scan to access information about voting procedures and awareness materials. Ballot papers are also provided in sign language to assist voters with hearing impairments, while Braille guides are available for voters with visual impairments. Each ballot includes a clear notice indicating the number of seats to be selected in each constituency to help voters cast valid ballots.
On Nov. 29, the Supreme Administrative Court annulled election results in 30 constituencies from the first phase, ordering the process to be rerun from the last valid step, which it said was the campaign period. The first round of the rerun was held abroad on Dec. 8-9 and domestically on Dec. 10-11. The run-off vote is taking place in constituencies across the governorates of Giza, Fayoum, Minya, Assiut, New Valley, Sohag, Luxor, Aswan, Alexandria, and Beheira.
