Egypt FM Engages in De-escalation Talks with Iran and US Amid Rising Tensions

Cairo: Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty conducted separate phone conversations with Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and the US Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff to address regional developments amidst escalating tensions, the foreign ministry announced.

According to State Information Service Egypt, FM Abdelatty emphasized the necessity of reducing escalation and containing rising tensions, warning against the risk of the region descending into further instability. He highlighted the importance of de-escalation and fostering a climate conducive to diplomatic resolutions.

In its statement, the foreign ministry noted that Abdelatty underscored the need to adhere to diplomatic pathways and prepare conditions for resuming dialogue between the United States and Iran. The aim is to reach a comprehensive agreement on the nuclear issue that considers the interests of all parties involved. Such an agreement, he stated, would bolster security and stability both regionally and internationally.

In a recent development in September, Cairo played a role in facilitating an agreement between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), allowing the UN nuclear watchdog to resume inspections of the Iranian nuclear program.

Abdelatty's diplomatic outreach comes in the wake of escalating tensions between the United States and Iran over the last two days, following a series of statements by US President Donald Trump. Trump indicated that Washington was combining increased military pressure with an openness to diplomacy in its approach toward Tehran.

President Trump confirmed the deployment of additional US naval and air assets to the Middle East, describing the move as a precautionary deterrent to prevent further escalation and protect US interests and allies in the region. He suggested that the show of force was meant to push Tehran back toward negotiations rather than trigger a confrontation.

Trump cautioned that the United States would not hesitate to act if Iran escalated its nuclear activities or contributed to destabilizing actions in the region, emphasizing that 'all options remain on the table.'

US officials stated that the military deployments were supported by expanded aerial drills and heightened readiness, positioning the measures as part of a broader strategy to reinforce deterrence while maintaining open diplomatic channels.

Senior figures in Washington signaled that the US is prepared for negotiations if Tehran seeks dialogue, indicating that informal communication lines remain open. Meanwhile, Iran has condemned the US military buildup, warning that continued pressure and threats risk further destabilizing the region. Iranian officials have asserted that any attack would be met with a strong response, reiterating that diplomacy is the only viable solution to resolving disputes.

This exchange of rhetoric occurs amidst heightened regional volatility, including tensions in the Gulf and concerns over the spillover effects of a broader confrontation. These developments have sparked international concerns about the risk of miscalculation, prompting regional and international actors, including Egypt, to intensify diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and encourage a return to dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
