Cairo: Egypt and the European Union held a round of consultations on multilateral issues, co-chaired by Amr el Sherbiny, Assistant Foreign Minister for Multilateral Affairs and International Security, and Martin Bille Hermann, Managing Director for Multilateral Relations, Human Rights and Democracy, and Deputy Political Director at the European External Action Service (EEAS). The discussions took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptian Expatriates in the New Capital.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the consultations addressed several issues on the agenda of the United Nations and other international bodies, focusing on initiatives related to UN reform, Security Council reform and expansion, and disarmament efforts. Additionally, the discussions included developments in UN peacekeeping operations and peacebuilding efforts. Egypt's facilitative role in the 2025 Review of the UN Peacebuilding Architecture was acknowledged, leading to the adoption of twin Security Council and General Assembly resolutions.
UNESCO-related matters were also discussed, with the European Union congratulating Egypt on Dr. Khaled El-Enany's election as UNESCO Director-General. Both parties emphasized the importance of joint coordination to bolster UNESCO's role in preserving cultural heritage.
The talks reflected a shared understanding between Egypt and the EU, reaffirming the United Nations' pivotal role in the multilateral international system, particularly in upholding international peace and security and promoting development. The consultations emphasized maintaining the intergovernmental nature of the UN, where member states' ownership and leadership are central to all efforts and initiatives.
Concluding the consultations, both sides agreed to hold such meetings regularly and continue coordinating on multilateral issues.
