Egypt and IFAD Discuss Strategies to Support Small Farmers and Livestock Breeders

Cairo: Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouq engaged in discussions with a delegation from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to explore avenues for enhancing joint cooperation and expediting development projects aimed at small farmers and livestock breeders throughout Egypt.According to State Information Service Egypt, the meeting included participation from IFAD Regional Director for the Near East, North Africa and Europe Naoufel Telahigue, and IFAD Country Director in Egypt Vrej Jijyan, alongside Deputy Agriculture Minister Moustafa El-Sayyad. The discussions evaluated the progress of existing projects with a focus on hastening their implementation to ensure timely support reaches the intended beneficiaries, especially smallholders in targeted regions.Farouq emphasized the robust strategic partnership with IFAD, emphasizing that the current cooperation is centered on improving the livelihoods of small-scale farmers and enhancing their resilience to climate cha nge, which increasingly threatens food security. The dialogue also underscored the progress made in border governorates, particularly Matrouh, with a focus on rangeland development to sustain livestock resources vital to Bedouin communities.The minister highlighted the need for increased investments in sustainable water resources and the integration of clean energy solutions into agricultural operations, which would help in reducing costs and protecting the environment. Additionally, Farouq noted that rural women are a key priority within joint projects, receiving support through loans and technical training programs. There is also potential for cooperation in expanding biogas units to recycle agricultural waste into clean energy and high-quality organic fertilizers.Farouq also mentioned IFAD's assistance in combating the red palm weevil using modern technology, which is crucial for safeguarding Egypt's palm resources and enhancing export opportunities. IFAD's regional director commended the Egyptian gove rnment's management of joint projects, labeling Egypt as a regional model for implementing IFAD-supported programs. He affirmed the fund's commitment to providing further technical and financial support to the most vulnerable areas.
