Amman: Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hany Swailem called for urgent regional cooperation to address intensifying water challenges across the Arab world during the opening session of the Seventh Arab Water Week in Jordan on Sunday.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the Egyptian minister, speaking on behalf of Arab states, highlighted the increasing pressure on shared water resources in the region, where 21 countries depend on transboundary surface or groundwater. Minister Swailem stressed the necessity for robust cooperation under international law, particularly in light of unilateral actions, referencing Ethiopia's controversial dam operations.
He pointed out that over 90 percent of the Arab population is experiencing critical water scarcity, a situation exacerbated by climate change, population growth, and extreme weather events. In response to these challenges, several countries have increased funding for the water sector and initiated national strategies to bridge the growing gap between water supply and demand.
Minister Swailem also emphasized the significance of an integrated 'Water-Energy-Food-Environment Nexus' approach. He described it as a strategic framework essential for enhancing resource management and accelerating progress toward achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
