Nairobi: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, with UN Secretary General, Mr. Ant³nio Guterres, on the sidelines of the Africa-France Summit in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. Spokesman for the Presidency Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy stated that President El-Sisi expressed Egypt’s appreciation for Mr. Guterres’ efforts and leadership of the United Nations over recent years, amidst complex international circumstances and crises. The President praised the ongoing cooperation between Egypt and the UN regarding regional conflicts and crises, alongside developmental collaboration within the ‘United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2023-2027’ with Egypt, aiding the state’s efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
According to State Information Service Egypt, UN Secretary-General Guterres expressed his appreciation for the cooperation extended by Egypt since he assumed office. He lauded President El-Sisi’s diplomatic efforts to enhance security and stability in the Middle East and Africa, describing Egypt’s role as fundamental to these efforts.
The meeting’s focus was current regional developments, particularly the Iranian crisis. The discussions reflected a convergence of views between the President and the UN Secretary-General concerning the seriousness of the current state of uncertainty and its negative repercussions on the region and globally. President El-Sisi and Secretary-General Guterres stressed the importance of supporting efforts aimed at achieving peaceful settlements to the conflicts, preserving state sovereignty and the resources of their peoples.
In this context, President El-Sisi outlined Egypt’s efforts to restore regional security and stability in coordination with active international and regional parties. He underscored Egypt’s full support for the Gulf states and its categorical rejection of any threats to their sovereignty or security.
President El-Sisi also reiterated the critical role of United Nations agencies in delivering humanitarian aid in Sudan and the Gaza Strip. UN Secretary-General Guterres highlighted the considerable challenges facing UN agency operations, particularly funding pressures, while acknowledging Egypt’s significant role in alleviating human suffering resulting from conflicts and crises, especially in Sudan and the Gaza Strip.
