Cairo: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli reviewed a detailed report on the executive status of the presidential initiative aimed at eliminating waiting lists for surgical operations during the period from December 27, 2025, to January 27, 2026.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the report is part of directives issued by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to improve healthcare services and expand the implementation of presidential health initiatives, including the program to end surgical waiting lists. The president had directed the allocation of EGP 3 billion to accelerate the clearance of waiting lists for critical and urgent cases, aiming to ease patients' suffering as part of a new social protection package.
The initiative targets the prevention of accumulating waiting lists across various medical specialties and interventions. Since its inception, more than three million patients have benefited through services provided by hospitals affiliated with the Health Ministry, Higher Education Ministry, Armed Forces, police, civil society organizations, private hospitals, and facilities of the General Authority for Healthcare.
The report highlighted that approximately 43,000 patients underwent surgical interventions during the specified period. These interventions spanned a range of medical fields, including ophthalmology, cardiac catheterization, open-heart surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, oncology, cochlear implants, liver and kidney transplants, as well as peripheral and cerebral catheterizations.
Additionally, the report noted that 3,262 cases were transitioned to medication-based treatment during the same timeframe, while 5,443 patients received surgical procedures through the General Organization for Health Insurance. Furthermore, 86,609 patients obtained medication despite not being covered by health insurance until January 27, 2026, while 41,126 cases remain on waiting lists, including those registered under the Health Insurance system.
