Minya: Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli and his accompanying delegation inspected the trial operation of the Canal Sugar Company factory in Mallawi at the start of his tour of developmental and service projects. The project is implemented via a UAE-Egyptian partnership as part of preparations for the 2026 sugar beet season. Madbouli listened to a presentation outlining the company's activities and posed for a photo-op with company officials and a number of workers.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Managing Director and CEO of the company, Kamel Abdallah, explained that the company operates a large sugar beet factory with a single production line and an annual production capacity of up to 900,000 tons of sugar. This production covers 20% of domestic market consumption, in addition to exports generating annual revenues of up to $80 million. The factory employs more than 1,000 direct workers and over 7,000 indirect workers, around 60% of whom are from the Minya governorate.
He added that the factory began trial operation in April 2025 during the 2024/2025 sugar beet season, before halting operation at the end of the sugar beet receiving season on August 10, 2025, to undergo maintenance and preparations for the 2026 sugar beet season. Madbouli and his accompanying delegation also toured the factory, inspecting several stages of the production process.
Abdallah noted that the company works with more than 20,000 farmers to supply inputs for the industry. He added that the company reclaimed around 181,000 feddans in the West Minya desert, supplying about 40% of the factory's beet requirements. Of this area, around 14,400 feddans were cultivated with sugar beet during the 2025/2026 season, alongside other crops, using modern irrigation methods based on smart agriculture systems and rationalized water use.
Abdallah highlighted several of the company's achievements, noting that it ranked first in the national initiative for green projects through the sustainable Canal sugar project, which focuses on recycling wastewater, sugar beet pulp, and carbon. The company also won first place in the large-scale projects category of the Industrial Innovation Awards for wastewater treatment using bacteria and the reuse of carbon dioxide in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment.
