Official Says Egypt’s Relations with Somalia Strategic

Cairo: Egypt's Deputy Head of the Council for African Affairs, Ambassador Salah Halima, emphasized that the relationship between Egypt and Somalia holds strategic importance, with roots extending back generations. Halima highlighted that Egypt's national security is intertwined with Somali, Arab, and African security.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Halima, in a phone interview with state-run Nile News, affirmed Egypt's unwavering support for Somalia's unity and territorial integrity amidst challenges to its sovereignty. He detailed Egypt's involvement in supporting Somalia's counterterrorism measures and its contribution to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). Halima noted that Egypt aids in the development of state institutions, which helps Somalia bolster its internal security and stability, and manage its external relations effectively.

Halima also pointed out that Egypt collaborates with Somalia in various economic sectors and capacity-building initiatives, including security training and educational scholarships through Egyptian universities and Al-Azhar. The Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development, a Foreign Ministry tool, plays a role in this capacity-building effort. Furthermore, he emphasized Egypt's pivotal role in enhancing trade relations and supporting infrastructure projects within the Somali states. The two nations share a unified vision for security and stability, underscored by several agreements on joint defense and a military cooperation protocol, reinforcing Egypt's commitment to Somalia's security and stability.
