Ministry of Antiquities Unveils New Archaeological Site in South Sinai Governorate

Cairo: An Egyptian archaeological mission from the Supreme Council of Antiquities, conducting research in South Sinai, has uncovered a previously unknown site of remarkable historical and artistic significance called the Umm Irak Plateau. This site is considered one of the most important recent archaeological finds in the region.According to State Information Service Egypt, the discovery is part of an ongoing scientific survey and documentation project focusing on rock inscriptions in South Sinai. The endeavor has been facilitated under the guidance of Sheikh Rabie Barakat, a local resident of the Sarabit al-Khadim area. His involvement highlights the crucial role of the local population in aiding governmental efforts to preserve and protect cultural heritage. The archaeological team successfully documented the entire site, which features a naturally formed sandstone rock shelter. This shelter extends over 100 meters along the eastern side of the plateau, with a depth ranging from two to three meters. The height of the shelter's ceiling varies between approximately one and a half meters to half a meter, adding to the site's unique characteristics.
