Cairo: Al-Azhar Mosque welcomed today, Tuesday, Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Professor of Economics and Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University in the United States. Known as one of the world's leading public intellectuals, Professor Sachs is recognized for his fair and principled positions on issues concerning the Muslim world, including the Palestinian cause and the ongoing events in Gaza. His visit to the mosque took place on the sidelines of his meeting with His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Prof. Ahmad at-Tayyeb.
According to State Information Service Egypt, His Eminence Dr. Mohamed ad-Duwaini, Deputy of Al-Azhar, accompanied Professor Sachs on an introductory tour inside Al-Azhar Mosque. During the tour, Professor Sachs learned about the intellectual and scholarly life of the mosque, as well as the educational activities of the Al-Azhar Riwaq. He observed Quran memorization circles and lessons in Islamic and Arabic sciences, and listened to a detailed explanation of these activities and their role in reinforcing the values of moderation and balance, and in correcting misconceptions among visitors to Al-Azhar Mosque who come from across the world. This distinguished role has long established the mosque as a global platform for spreading a culture of moderation and centrism.
Professor Sachs expressed his delight at the visit, extending his thanks to the Grand Imam for granting him the opportunity to visit Al-Azhar Mosque, one of the oldest and most historic mosques in the Muslim world. He affirmed that Al-Azhar Mosque is among the most beautiful, unique, and remarkable places of worship he has ever seen. He also praised the vibrant intellectual and cultural activity taking place within the mosque and expressed his admiration for the Islamic ornamentation adorning its halls, reflecting the deep heritage of Islamic art and its distinctive aesthetic character.
