GAFI Hosts Conference on CBAM’s Impact on Egyptian Economy

Cairo: Dalia El Hawary, Vice President of the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI), announced that the authority is organizing a series of conferences focused on environmental sustainability. These conferences aim to explore the implications of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) introduced by the European Union. This initiative aligns with GAFI's strategic objectives to bolster investment and production in Egypt.According to State Information Service Egypt, GAFI recently hosted a special conference dedicated to presenting a World Bank report evaluating the effect of the EU's CBAM on Egypt's economy. The event drew a broad range of participants, including representatives from key governmental bodies such as the Ministry of Industry, the General Organization for Export and Import Control, and the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation. The Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, part of the Ministry of Environment, as well as various stakeholders f rom the business community, also took part.Hawary elaborated on the role of the CBAM as a regulatory mechanism designed to curtail carbon emissions while enhancing the competitiveness of exports from developing nations. The mechanism is particularly relevant to carbon-intensive industries, including iron, steel, aluminum, and cement.
