Cairo: Political consultations took place on Saturday, July 04, 2026, between Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty, and EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka luica. The discussions centered around Egypt-EU relations and reviewed the latest regional and international developments of mutual interest.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the Foreign Minister praised the progress in Egypt-EU relations, following the Egypt-EU Summit held last year which bolstered bilateral cooperation, especially in implementing the strategic partnership's six pillars. He emphasized the importance of building on the summit's outcomes and the 11th Egypt-EU Association Council meeting held in Luxembourg in mid-June.
Abdelatty highlighted the significance of enhancing economic, investment, and trade cooperation across several sectors, noting that economic collaboration is fundamental to the strategic partnership. He expressed gratitude for the EU's support in Egypt's economic reforms and financial stability, as well as in education, scientific research, and skills development through programs like Horizon Europe and Erasmus+.
The Minister stressed the importance of a long-term strategic vision for cooperation on migration and mobility, beyond short-term crisis management. He welcomed the launch of the 'Mediterranean Pact,' describing it as crucial for deepening the Euro-Mediterranean partnership, and reiterated Egypt's commitment to working with European partners to achieve results beneficial to both peoples.
The consultations also covered regional developments, particularly the US-Iran negotiation track. The foreign minister briefed the EU official on Egypt's assessment of regional dynamics and efforts to resolve conflicts. He emphasized the momentum created by the Iran-US memorandum of understanding and its potential for sustainable arrangements that enhance regional security and stability.
Abdelatty also called for international efforts to refocus on the Palestinian cause, facilitating conditions for implementing the US peace plan's first phase and transitioning to the second phase. He further updated the EU official on Egypt's positions regarding developments in Lebanon, Libya, and Sudan.
