Cairo: Egypt's Grand Mufti Nazir Ayyad emphasized that Egypt and Jordan have strong coordination to confront extremist discourse and promote moderate religious thought.According to State Information Service Egypt, Ayyad highlighted the significant role that Egypt's Dar Al-Ifta plays both regionally and internationally. He noted that its mission has transitioned from a local focus to becoming a recognized reference for balanced religious edicts.The Grand Mufti pointed out that the establishment of the general secretariat for fatwa authorities worldwide in 2015 under Dar Al-Ifta has strengthened this role. The secretariat now boasts 111 members from 108 countries, aiming to coordinate efforts among fatwa institutions, share expertise, and counter extremist interpretations.Ayyad elaborated on the cooperation with Jordan, stating that the relationship between Dar Al-Ifta and the General Iftaa Department of Jordan is a reflection of a shared commitment to moderation and responsible fatwa issuance. He mentio ned that a memorandum of understanding has been signed to enhance cooperation, training, and the exchange of expertise between the two entities.Additionally, Ayyad addressed the challenges facing contemporary fatwa work, which include the uncontrolled distribution of religious rulings on digital platforms and the complexity of emerging issues in fields such as economics, medicine, and technology. He indicated that Dar Al-Ifta is considering the use of artificial intelligence as a supportive tool to improve the fatwa system while maintaining that issuing fatwas remains a human scholarly responsibility.Furthermore, Ayyad stressed the importance of a regulated process in determining the start of Islamic lunar months, which combines verified moon sighting with precise astronomical calculations to ensure accuracy and social cohesion.
